These are a few of my favourite things...
Feb. 22nd, 2005 01:24 pmJust randomly, I thought I'd post up one of my favourite pictures ever.

I love that picture. I love the way you can almost feel the heat, feel the crackle in the air. I love the movement, the way you can see the tiger's nervousness in his bunched neck muscles. I love the fact it reminds me of the monsoon season in Nepal, where you could bathe in the rain, it was so warm. I love the fact that it has a tiger, which is normally shown as something big and scary as the rather frightened kid in all this.
I think I identify rather strongly with that tiger at times.
I think I also love that picture because I like tigers, and thunderstorms, and the tropics. All three together - how can that be wrong?
I don't suppose anyone else wants to share one of their favourite pictures with me?

I guess.
Sorry.

Date: 2005-02-22 01:43 pm (UTC)I love most of Turner's paintings that I've seen, but there's so much going on in this one. The old ship, the Temeraire, majestic even on her last voyage, contrasting with the dark modern steam tug, which seems uncouth when compared with the ethereal beauty of the old sailer. There's a mourning of the passing of an age, a parallel with old soldiers being put out to retirement. It's an unbearably sad painting, yet at the same time beautiful.

You should see it in real life, then you'll understand ;)

Date: 2005-02-22 02:16 pm (UTC)Near one of the underpass exits, there used to be the most incredible painting; a pale, almost translucent woman with long hair that slowly transformed into feathers as it spilled down her back. The expression on her face was more emotive than that of most of the people I've ever met; saddened, and determined, and knowing. I could have just stood and stared at it all day. Fortunately for me, it was a 24 hour Tescos.
The last time I went through that underpass, it had been painted over by something just as technically pretty, but nowhere near as soulful. I may very well be kicking myself for the rest of my life for not getting a picture of it whilst it was still there.

But yeah, I like Klimt a lot. There are probably others, but that's the first that came to mind. :)
This picture was brought to you by my desire to prove I'm not _entirely_ incompetent. :P

Date: 2005-02-22 02:37 pm (UTC)Dali's Christ of St John on the Cross. I adore Dali's work, and this is just incredible. One day I'll even pop over to Glasgow and see it for real :) .
