...your supervisor never giving you books for your bibliography, but instead only throwing out names, and then occasionally saying things such as 'oh, yes, I don't think she's actually published anything yet, but I know she's doing some research in the area'. It leaves one with a great sense of confusion when looking in libraries.

I didn't get even that much in either of my degrees.
I did get a post-modernist proselytiser attempting to persuade me that Gellner had said everything there was to be said about identity, and that writing anything on nationalism was therefore implicitly redundant, but I don't really count that as helping. And she, thank God, was not my supervisor....
Still, the "but I'm not sure that's available to you yet" line that you start getting from tutors at post-grad level can certainly be really, really annoying.
