Last night I got home late and didn't really have time for a proper dinner. I made myself cereal, and afterwards boiled a couple of eggs. OK, not a great supper, but I'd had a big lunch and wasn't that hungry.

But yes...where was I?

Of course! The eggs.

It was while I was making the hard boiled eggs that I remembered something silly. I remember just how much I like hard boiled eggs. It isn't the taste, particularly (although egg is nice enough). It's more the entire experience. You boil an egg, and wait until enough time has passed that it is probably hard boiled. You take it out of the saucepan, precariously balanced on a spoon, and then run cold water over it until it is just cool enough to hold in your hands. Then you take it in your hands, bouncing it gently from palm to palm, because it is always just that little bit too hot, before cracking it on the side of the bowl.

Then you peel the shell, carefully, trying to get the shell off in as many big shards as possible, and trying not to dig nails or fingers into the smooth white egg underneath, because a pitted and gouged at hard boiled egg always looks awful. And then, at the end, there is the hard boiled egg, which (when you make it this way) is always still slightly gooey in the centre - not running, but with a warm and clinging texture that sticks to your tongue.

This process reminds me a little of being a kid, and a lot more of being a teenager in Nepal, where eggs were one of the few snacks we had access to, and tended to be one of two breaks from rice and curry. It's a silly silly fondness, but one I've still got.

Does anyone else have silly little things that will just always bring them a quick flicker of joy whenever they encounter them?
