I found this lying about on [profile] dunsirn's LJ and thought of you. It's truly, tragically, heart breakingly true.

As someone who has Too Much Time On Her Hands, I offer the edited highlights:

Supernatural creatures are best avoided. If they can’t be avoided, they should be addressed respectfully. If a supernatural creature sets you a task you’re well and truly screwed.

...bring a friend with you. Friends keep bad things from happening. If things go badly anyway, you’ll need their help. And if things go well (hey, it could happen), it’ll be nice to have a friend along to share the laughs.

See?

If we stay together and stay away from any... er, thing at all, then we'll be fine.

It must be so.

*looks wary*

:P

Advice to live by in my opinion. Especially in worlds other than your own. We should, I feel, bone up on our knowledge of American folksong as well. Jez puts waaay to much store by those songs.

There's only one person I want to do any boning up with, and we left him behind in alternative-Stoke. :-(

We have folksongs?

I think that our backwoods people mostly just eat other people.

You definitely have folk songs. And folk dancing. Elle and Scott and myself all saw an Applachian folk dancing team doing a display at the Warwick Folk Festival.

Applachian folk dancing.

...

Was it an Authentic American Experience?

I was forced into taking a country western dance class in collage (someone with breasts asked me to). It was as nightmarish as one might imagine. They were upset at me because I didn't understand the most "logical" of steps.

I'm still a little bitter.

It was as authentic as Old Orleans burgers!

Actually, the music was quite cheery and the dancing was rather good, with rather a lot of 'yee ha' moments. I rather liked it. I may have little taste, however.

It was great. Everyone should try appalachian at least once. It's really good fun, if deceptively complicated. Most of the giggling comes from getting it horribly wrong the first 15 times.

Which one of you most closely resembled "River" from Serenity while doing folk dancing?

That would be telling.
I think Scott most resembled Jayne though. He ignored us both until we stopped.

Well, if I had to bet money on who most resembled an insane giggling girl who looked pretty dancing, had creepy insights and could suddenly kill everyone in the room... it would probably be Scott.

Yep, definitely.
Though, to be fair, that description could apply to most of my social group, give or take a beard or two.

What's weird is that I'm suddenly picturing Sally as Mal.

Erk. And because of that, I just pictured Jez as Inara, the Companion.

Which part? Sally dressed as a cowboy or Jez as whore?

As you might recall, I always had a strong tendency to burst out with a good 'yee ha' on occassion. I also had a fondness for overalls.

Old Orleans. There's a restaurant suddenly in poor taste...

The songs or the edible people?

The songs.
I have no idea of the edibility or otherwise of Americans.

I prefer to live by Baldur's Gate rules myself.

You can smash people's jars, take their money and potions and they don't care.
