This is a quick aside - who else other than me is watching this?

And if you are I don't think I can take the tension right now!

Will Sexy Irish Chauffeur and Suffragette Lady Sibil run away together? They have to! I can't bear it if they don't! They are my OTP! And if this plot line turns into 'they would both be better off with their own class' I will hunt down Julian Fellowes and murder him.

How close to the wire will Snooty Lady Mary and Chippy Middle Class Matthew go before they end up together? I mean, they have been the headline romance since he first turned up, so they have to, right? Or will they actually marry other people? Are we building up to a dodgy affair and divorce storyline? And what happens when the news of the Dead Turkish Diplomat leaks, as it must do.

I think I want Noble Limping Valet and Even More Noble Chief Housemaid to just get on with it and get married. I am also not entirely enamored with the Pantomime Evil Irish Wife plot. It feels overblown to me (even by Downton Abbey standards) and I really want her to just go away. I understand that it is a matter of dramatic necessity that Bates and Anna can not actually shag and can only yearn, but really! it's been years now and there is only so much yearn that this girl can take.

Would Even More Noble Chief Housemaid still be able to be Chief Housemaid if she married Noble Limping Valet and went to live on a cottage on the estate?

I do not understand the rules for taking off one's hat indoors. Half the time the female cast seem to be wearing a skirt, blouse, and then a hat for no readily discernible reason. At other times they are not. When do they take them off?

Is it wrong to not hate Irritating Ginger Fiancee but instead just find her mind numbingly dull? I really want her to have some kind of villainous secret. If she keeps on just being Nice But Wet and Not Lady Mary I think I lost the will to live.

And I have to wait until Sunday until the next installment! Aieee!

It is awesome! I even have jez expressing mild interest in what is going on, and he normally loathes costume drama.

We're big fans.

Amanda squirms every so often when modern sensibilities creep in. She is a social historian though :-)

I decided early on that if I tried to start applying some kind of 'historical realism' filter to Downton Abbey, I might also need to start judging it on its plot plausibility and emotional realism and I just don't want to do that, frankly. ;)

Haven't been following it this season - but do hats stay on when
one is Calling On Neighbours? Wearing outdoor hats inside your /own/ house seems silly, but given that fussing in front of someone else's hallway mirror would rather muss with entrances and exits (not to mention the danger of hair out of place, without favoured maid on hand to fix!), keeping hats on when visiting would make sense.

Mobcaps and feather/lace fripperies are more hair coverings/decoration than hats anyway....

That would make a lot of sense!

I think I was just confused as one scene showed the Dowager Countess, Lady Mary and Aunt From London all sitting around drinking tea wearing hats, but no other outdoors clothes and it looked odd to me. Maybe it is a London thing.

I reckon that even if it wasn't the actual historical/etiquette reason, someone in hair & makeup was very insistent that is was - can you imagine the irritation of trying to do multiple takes of scenes where actresses removed carefully placed hats & hatpins in front of the camera, then screwed up & needed to repeat however many times, with their hair needing to be fixed between each take?
