Iron Man 2

Sometimes I fear that I may actually be dead inside and have no soul.

I just got back from seeing Iron Man 2.

My sole and overriding thought was 'my god! Natasha Romanov is a total Mary Sue'. This was closely followed by 'Tony Stark is dying? Could it happen quicker?' and finished with 'has Ivan Venko done anything unreasonable at any point? Because I don't see it.'

I also wanted to drag Nick Fury out and give him a make over.

Like I said, I think I may have no soul.

I had a feeling this would happen. Seems like, if ever we see a movie at around the same time, but in separate places, we have vastly different opinions of it...

But yes, you have no soul.

I guess I must be, to remain untouched by the story of one spoilt billionaire and his vast industrial military complex, and his struggle against the underprivileged son of the man his father betrayed and swindled. ;)

You hate Batman?

And yes, as we've covered in your failure to love the ninja attack scene from the Last Samurai - you may be a little bit dead inside. But I'm sure there's something you can do like taxidermy or kidnapping children and locking them in cages in your basement that will help you find some kind of happiness.

:P

I don't know. I'd maybe have had some sympathy for the bad guy if he hadn't decided to make his point by endangering innocent lives instead of turning up with all the proof he had that his father worked with Stark...

And you aren't supposed to like Tony Stark...

But think of all the money he had to spend! The sacrifice!

I have been less impressed with the first film the more times I have been made to sit through it again, I suspect my view on the second film (based on what I have read/seen) will be as 'soulless' as your's.

Yeah, but we've established your wrongness on numerous occasions.

I'm just more critical in my approach to films than many.

You may be critical, but your criticism is incredibly wrong.

She WAS, wasn't she? Honestly, was there a single box she didn't tick?

The "I'm actually loyal" box, I would guess.

But she was a loyal SHIELD agent. Totally on the side of good. If she'd been a bad guy he had to kill, I might have viewed that as a redeeming feature.

I think you're missing the point.

She is Black Widow.

She _will_ double cross everyone.

It's the reason she exists. And when you think they'll do something different with her, that she'll be portrayed different this time... bam. Maybe not now, maybe not until Avengers, but it'll happen.

:-)

She didn't have a dragon. I kept expecting her to announce she had a pet dragon.

Probably.

By the way, an LJ-cut regarding spoilers might have been appropriate on this one. Just sayin'.

SPOILERS WITHIN

SPOILERS BELOW

OK. Natasha is not a Mary Sue, the main character doesn't fall in love with her, she doesn't have super secret uber powers that save the day, she doesn't outshine our other secondary heroes and she is in no way a stand-in for Justin Theroux or outshine Pepper Pots.

And Ivan Venko was wrong. yes, his father was a bit hard done to, but he was going to take the power supply that would have revolutionised the world and profit off it in a bad way. And Venko was selling plutonium to Pakistan. Then he killed at least 4 race drivers. Then he killed a prisoner and a guard at the prison. Then he killed two of Hammer's men. Then he sent combat drones on a rampage in a crowded area, killing many. "Daddy wasn't wealthy" doesn't excuse mass murder.

Plus the action scenes were actually dead cool (some choreographed by Genndy Tartakovsky), the Black Widow fight scenes were surprisingly well done and RDJ just plain rocks.

Did you perhaps sell your soul for eternal youth? Or did your cats steal it during the night?

Darn I'm going to have to entirely rethink my justification for destroying the world you realise?

Sorry dude, but someone had to set your straight. Now, a girl rejecting you or a bad hair day, those are good reasons.

This. They don't spend enough time on the specifics of the 'selling the future of the world for a quick buck', nor the whole plutonium thing.

Also, look at it this way, rather than strapping on a pair of whips and going to the races, given that I'm fairly sure that Tony Stark hasn't applied for international patents for the power source he's not putting into large scale production, Ivan could live well and help a lot of people using the fact he can make such.
