And lo! Last night a mob of us went to see Star Trek - [profile] pierot, [profile] ksirafai, [profile] reindeerflotila, [profile] astro_dust, [profile] unifex, [profile] castorlion, [personal profile] adze, [profile] becky_spence and [profile] suave_steve. Plus me.

It was, first of all, lovely to see everyone, and secondarily, I really enjoyed Star Trek. It was a glorious, full throttle, unapologetic re-boot of the franchise. The performances were all stellar, I think I'm in love with Spock (it will make sense if you see the film), and goddamnit, it was cheating to open the film with a Thunderchild-style doomed final stand. I was nearly in tears in the first ten minutes.

It's the best film I've seen this year. Really. Go and see it!

I got home in a good mood and went to bed early. And then, sadly, woke up at 5 am having a mild panic attack. God knows why, but it meant I couldn't get back to sleep until 6 am, and so I'm a little wobbly today. Still, hopefully today will be a quiet day and I'll get a load done at work.

Onward!

Moving swiftly through the waters,
Cannons blazing as she came,
Sent a mighty metal warlord,
Crashing down in sheets of flame...

OK, now I want to see the first ten minutes. Because I think we have similar tastes in heroism :)

I have to say that I love going to see big movies with big mobs of people.

And yes, the movie was awesome - I very, very rarely applaud movies, but this time I couldn't help it!

Oh, for you, Chris Pine, who played Kirk, has apparently recently been announced as Green Lantern.

He was a possible, but Bradley Cooper from Alias is currently the front-runner. At leat that's what my spies are saying.

IMDB says it's announced, but I could be wrong...

IMDB is pretty wrong pretty often, but who knows? I'd be happy with either.

I had heard this as a rumour, and we discussed it briefly in the car last night.  I’m not sure about it, to be honest.  They’re going with a Hal Jordan movie, which makes sense as a way to introduce the hero, but I see two problems with Chris Pine as Hal.

Firstly, Hal Jordan and Jim Kirk have a lot of similarities – enormous self-confidence, bordering on arrogance; a womanising streak a mile wide; complete fearlessness & a refusal to give up.  So what you  might end up with is people looking at the movie and saying “Hey, it’s Captain Kirk with a green ring.”

Secondly, I just can’t see Chris Pine as an experienced Test Pilot.  He’s just too young.

That said, he might pull it off really well, so I’ll wait and see.

They're planning Hal as a bit younger.

I'll take it as a compliment that you've completely ripped off my opinion and commentary from the car journey home last night and claimed it as your own, shall I?

I loved Trek too. Those opening ten minutes just emotionally connected and tied you into the characters.

I loved how the hero shots of the characters and even the Enterprise were tastefully done but still gave you a Woo! feeling.

It was just so very well done. It hit exactly the right line between 'taking itself too seriously' and 'just silly', and was this glorious romp. I thought Zachary Quinto was perfect at Spock, and I really liked Chris Pine as Kirk. I loved the reasoning for why this is a slightly alternate reality as well - I think it's really liberating and is going to be a really positive thing for future films.

I'm just now wondering how long Quinto will keep doing Heroes, for it is not the big and shiny thing it once was, and I suspect he's about to have a lot of options as to what he wants to do with his time.
