I swear to God, I once read a quote somewhere which said "any man can only have one loyalty, all the rest are trivial' or 'each man must have one loyalty, all the rest can only be trivialities' or something like that. It sounds a bit like Machiavelli, but may well have come from a role playing game supplement or something like that.

I now can't find it anywhere and I think I'm going crazy.

Does anyone recognise this quote and could anyone tell me where it comes from?

It does sound very Machiavellian but I've only read The Prince, and I don't think it's from that...

I think it was Henry VIII, or one of his supporters at the time of the reformation. I believe it was in favour of a single head of church and state.
