Election results....
May. 3rd, 2008 10:15 amI'm less upset that Boris Johnson is mayor, and considerably more upset that the BNP took 5.33% of the total vote.
That's thousands of people. 48% of registered voters turned out to vote, and I believe that's several million people. Five per cent of them voted to ban women wearing the islamic veil from public transport, to encourage the police to harass young black men, and overall voted for a party who say that if they ever come to power on a national level, their first act would be to offer £50,000 to anyone of Black or Asian descent who is prepared to leave the UK and return to their country of ethnic origin.
There's a candidate, representing these things, on the London Assembly.
That is upsetting me.
At least the Green party has two seats, so I guess my vote counted for something.
*sighs*
I feel like the world it is a'changing. And not in a good way.

Date: 2008-05-03 09:53 am (UTC)On the first page of their manifesto is 'we want immigrants and the descendents of immigrants to go back to their country of ethnic origin'. How can anyone miss the significance of that???
Are people really that stupid?

Date: 2008-05-03 10:58 am (UTC)People will always be happy to stand behind someone yelling out against a group of people they blame for their problems, because they don't think who it might actually include.
I bet if there was a party taking a stance against hoodies and chavs, a fair few people I know would stand against it....

Date: 2008-05-03 09:50 am (UTC)One of the really appealing things about London is the mish-mash of different cultures you can come across just from walking down the street - I think it's amazing, and I struggle to comprehend why people would want that to change.

Date: 2008-05-05 02:16 pm (UTC)Welcome to Democracy. All voices will be heard. All opinions valued, no matter their moral worth. Voters who back the BNP are hardly gonna take over are they? and the fact that these little parties get to stand or even gain a few seats lets everyone be reassured they live in a nice fair happy little place...just god forbid the proles should ever become a majority eh!?!
Cant let people like THAT have any real power can we? Classless system my arse...
*mutters* bah, damn hangover makin me grumpy...
