So.

It appears my laptop has died.

Or rather, the screen has gone again. I haven't dropped it, no one has trodden on it, and it was totally fine last night. This morning there is only a black screen. Everything else is working, I think. I can hear it all buzzing along, and the occasional noise of programmes starting up when I try and boot it up, but there is no screen.

I'm just out of my warranty, so no hope of getting it fixed for free.

I was considering getting a new laptop, and am quite close to just trying to transfer the contents of my hard drive to a datastick, and then looking for something new.

Why do laptops always die so fast?

In other news, I had a lovely day yesterday. I went to see Leah, an old friend from school, and her adorable daughter. Charlotte Darbyshire is a complete sweetheart, with the biggest blue eyes I've ever seen. It was fab just to hang out with Leah for a bit.

I'm now home, feeling very very poor, and wishing I had the cash to go out and do something exciting to do. Thankfully, my father tells me that I should be getting a little bit of inheritance money through in the next week, which won't make me rich, but will pay off my credit card, and leave me a little bit of money to buy something shiny with. Which will probably be a laptop, but I'll see if I can weasel some money aside for something frivolous as well.

In the interim, I shall head out into the day and go hunting for books, which may actually be useful for me. I shall do college work today. I shall. I shall.

And today will turn out alright in the end...

Good luck. I thoroughly recommend reconditioned laptops, which cost a fraction of the price and do almost as much as brand new ones.

I hope you're right.

Laptops are designed as a single unit and the warranty is designed for what they've made sure it will survive for.

Why does a laptop always fall apart just after the warranty runs out? Because firms aren't daft and know the rough life expectancy of a laptop. They are rarely built to the same quality as a desktop machine...

That said (and touching as much wood as possible because if it now breaks there is no way I can afford to replace it) my laptop is now 5 years old and doing fine, ok it's been dropped a few times, the screen can be a bit odd at certain angles and the HD is often full, but it works still.

I've never had a laptop, so I don't know.

But what I'm really posting to say is EEEEEEE! Molly Grue!

my laptop does that randomly on occasion, as do others I've seen, for me I've had success getting it to work again by closing and opening the "lid" a few times, just pushing it a bit to make sure everythings where it should, and rebooting it.
It may not work for you, but worth a try... or wave a hammer near it threateningly which is my patented cure for most computer ills!

One thing it's worth trying is to unplug it, remove the battery and try holding down the power button for 30 seconds.

I've had desktop PC's fail to output a picture (but are otherwise on) clear up because of that. As far as I understand the science, there's a buildup of charge somewhere in the motherboard that's mucking up the data.

Failing that, I can always bring down a tool set and have a play. It's not impossible for it to be something mundane rather than a total failure.

If you are in Reading on a week day pop into my work. There is a company there that rent warehousing space from us to recondition old machines. They can either give a bash at fixing it or sell you a reconditioned laptop cheap. (Needless to say I get on rather well with them and occasionally do them favours...)
