I am Vexed

A while ago, I decided to have a 30th birthday party.

I decided I'd actually invite some people along. Not a big party - just my family, and a chunk of close friends. However, as my living room can only hold eight people at a push, I decided to hire out an upstairs room at a pub.

So. I find a nice pub with a nice upstairs room in London Bridge. I call them and ask about room hire. They say "sure, but there's a £100 refundable deposit" I say "fine", book the room, and then call back a few days later to say I'm sending them a cheque, and can I check whether the cheque will be cashed as it's a refundable deposit. Or will they just keep the cheque and return it to me to be destroyed on the day. As a note - the latter is what has happened the last two times I've given someone a cheque as a refundable deposit.

The nice man on the phone says "no - it won't be cashed - it'll be kept and returned to you on the day." I ask again. He says the same thing. So I think "fine", write a cheque and forget about it.

Except then the bastards went and cashed the cheque. And what's worse, it went through during the four fricking days last month when I didn't have £100 clear in my account. So, I've now got £30 worth of bank charges, I may get trouble from Nationwide for having gone into unauthorised overdraft for ten minutes until they bounced the cheque, and I think I've bounced a cheque. I don't know if the bank will try and present it again (in which case it'll go through) or if I need to find another way to pay the goddamn pub.

I called them and shouted at them, but was just told by the manager that they always cash deposit cheques, because otherwise I could cancel the cheque if I cancel the party. So they always do that. And he doesn't know why they wouldn't. He has apologised for any confusion, but I'm still £30 out of pocket because I was given COMPLETELY the wrong information by the fricking pub.

So very very angry!

I've considered canceling the party, or moving it somewhere, but at this point it's too much hassle. I've written a slightly snarky e mail to the pub re-stating my issues with the situation, but saying if the cheque bounces, I'll pay them again. I'm now mildly worried that they'll just decide I'm more hassle than I'm worth and cancel on me.

I hate this. This combined with my recent wibbles about Mum are really making me remember why I don't normally celebrate birthdays, especially mine. I'm bloody well jinxed.

Gah.

My attitude in the same situation would probably be even more ranty and I'm not sure it'd help you calm down and resolve the situation.

At core they made an agreement with you which they broke, right?

They have cost you £30, I'd be looking for that back from them. If they don't give it back then I'd actually be hoping that the cheque bounces because then at least they'll get nothing from you. Then again you still would have the problem of finding a venue at short notice.

I share your extreme irritation!

I'd ask them to pay the £30.
