I find although it seems terribly lazy and wasting the precious hours of my life, on average i really need 9 hours a night. I can often tweak this and have only 5-6 hours on some nights and suffer the next day, but up to 5 days in a row with the 'recommended' 8 hours of sleep, fatigue really catches up to me and i crash and burn.
I'm lucky I guess, generally I'll make do with 6-7 hours sleep a night, but every now and again I sleep for ages or have a nap. I think the most important part is making sure you sleep when you're tired and not when you aren't and to have a consistant wake up time.
