[personal profile] obake - the package you sent me arrived this morning. Thank you so much - I was delighted to receive it! You sent me a load of imps I never would have thought of trying myself, which is even more appreciated.

I'll let you know how they work for me!

Somewhat vexingly, I have still not gotten any of my scents from ebay. I shall send out e mails today chasing. I did, at least, get a book I bought on amazon.co.uk a while ago, so today was a quite nice collection of parcels and surprises.

Now I can at last stop haunting the letterbox, and get down to the library. While smelling nice, of course.

In other news, I had a fantastic weekend - a visit to Hatfield on Saturday, followed up by visitors and burnt meat on Sunday. It was particularly nice to see [profile] imnotagoth away from game. Sadly, [profile] pierot seems to have poisoned himself over the weekend, and is now curled up in bed, occasionally coming downstairs to throw up. This is a shame, but hopefully he'll be alright by tomorrow.

The Brides of Dracula
Creepy
Haloa
Red Lantern
Velvet

Velvet is the only one still available, so I'm feeling quite spoilt by [personal profile] obake.

Are there descriptions of them anywhere?

13
April 2007 Incarnation

13 is significant, whether you consider it lucky, unlucky or just plain odd. Many believe it to be unfortunate…

… because there were 13 present at the Last Supper.
… Loki crashed a party of 12 at Valhalla, which ended in Baldur’s death.
… Oinomaos killed 13 of Hippodamia’s suitors before Pelops finally, in his own shady way, defeated the jealous king.
… In ancient Rome, Hecate’s witches gathered in groups of 12, the Goddess herself being the 13th in the coven.

Concern over the number thirteen echoes back beyond the Christian era. Line 13 was omitted form the Code of Hammurabi.

The shivers over Friday the 13th also have some interesting origins:

… Christ was allegedly crucified on Friday the 13th.
… On Friday, October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrests of Jaques de Molay, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, and sixty of his senior knights.
… In British custom, hangings were held on Fridays, and there were 13 steps on the gallows leading to the noose.

To combat the superstition, Robert Ingersoll and the Thirteen Club held thirteen-men dinners during the 19th Century. Successful? Hardly. The number still invokes trepidation to this day. A recent whimsical little serial killer study showed that the following murderers all have names that total thirteen letters:

Theodore Bundy
Jeffrey Dahmer
Albert De Salvo
John Wayne Gacy

And, with a little stretch of the imagination, you can also fit ‘Jack the Ripper’ and ‘Charles Manson’ into that equation.

More current-era paranoia: modern schoolchildren stop their memorization of the multiplication tables at 12. There were 13 Plutonium slugs in the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Apollo 13 wasn’t exactly the most successful space mission. All of these are things that modern triskaidekaphobes point to when justifying their fears.

For some, 13 is an extremely fortuitous and auspicious number…

… In Jewish tradition, God has 13 Attributes of Mercy. Also, there were 13 tribes of Israel, 13 principles of Jewish faith, and 13 is considered the age of maturity. … The ancient Egyptians believed that there were 12 stages of spiritual achievement in this lifetime, and a 13th beyond death. … The word for thirteen, in Chinese, sounds much like the word which means “must be alive”.

Thirteen, whether you love it or loathe it, is a pretty cool number all around.

… In some theories of relativity, there are 13 dimensions.
… It is a prime number, lucky number, star number, Wilson Prime, and Fibonacci number.
… There are 13 Archimedean solids.

AND…
… There were 13 original colonies when the United States were founded.

Says a lot about the US, doesn’t it?

A base of cocoa absolute and white chocolate with thirteen baneful and beneficial bits: cardamom, fig meat, grains of paradise, rice flower, chamomile, sandalwood, catnip, clove, and a bundle of five blessed blossoms and herbs.

I'd be surprised if you had the Apr 2007 version - as far as I know, that was only announced on Friday just gone (ie Fri 13th)...so I'd be surprised if anyone had that even first-hand yet!

I may well have an older version then. I just searched for "13" and "bpal".

Lemme check the nice print out I've got.

You're right! I've got an older version - from 2005/2006. It's got 13 ingredients, including white chocolate, tangerine, current, mandarin, white tea and iris.

Unquenchable desire, seething lust, malevolent sexuality, and voracious hunger lurking beneath a shimmering veil of unearthly beauty: gleaming skin musk, honey and white amber, plum blossom, osmanthus, sandalwood, calla lily, and a light, sensual blend of Eastern spices.

Myrrh, frankincense and cakes? How can that go wrong? :D

A few of the others might work on me as well, but I'm not sure they have the staying power for my skin...

Well, I've only tried Velvet so far, and while it is lovely, it does fade after a couple of hours, to a very light faded scent.

I'll try out the others over the next week and let you know. I may be slightly masochistic and try Creepy next, which is smelling astonishingly sweet and strong in the vial, and I am really unconvinced will work on me at all, but I need to know!

Yays! I'm glad you got it okay! I may have to send you another batch that's not so sweet. Me, I like the sweeter scents. :)

Less sweet scents would be lovely, although you are responsible for the first scent that my housemate doesn't actively cough at - she really doesn't like the musky scents. But then, I've only tried Chimera and Dragon's Heart before and they are very musky.

I'm trying 13 today, mostly because it is the most confusing scent I've ever had near my nose! I can't entirely work out what it smells like at all, let alone whether I like it or not.
