My day just started with me getting a £20 fine from South West trains. It's entirely my fault - I saw the oyster card readers at Vauxhall train station yesterday and so assumed that my oyster card would get me to work on the overground train.

It doesn't.

I got fined much money for not having a ticket.

I am now feeling deeply sulky.

Bah. And humbug.

I hardly think it's entirely your fault. They make it very unclear that pre-pay Oyster doesn't work on overland trains (although Oyster travelcards do), to the extent whereby it's near deceptive IMO.

I think in some ways I'm saying 'it's my fault' to stop myself stamping my feet even more than I am currently inclined to do. I also think that while I understand fare dodging is a problem, £20 is a hell of a lot to charge people when there is a reasonable chance of an honest mistake.

I felt the same way when my car got towed at Joe's old apartment complex. I wasn't in a numbered space, but they'd changed their policy so only residents could park anywhere in the complex. $250. I can fly anywhere in the US for that.

They definately don't make it clear, it seems like it would be an easy mistake to make.

20 quid isn't as bad as it could be. Once I was confused about a ticket on a train I was on in Poland, (I thought I could have a one zloty ticket instead of a two zloty ticket) and they fined me 175 zloty. Of course, they were taking advantage of a girl who didn't speak much Polish. Gah, I know they totally pocketed most of it.

Did you try explaining that you're really from London Below and that the rules of London Above don't really apply?

I believe it may have been coz I got on at Waterloo and the guard thought I had no excuse for not having bought a ticket!
