annwfynI do love the 7th Sea destiny spread that you do during character creation. There is something utterly glorious about the unexpected backgrounds, twists and turns that appear when pulling cards at random out of a deck.
Last night I started character gen with an earnest little Eisen combat machine.
I ended with a half Avalonian, half Ussuran girl, abandoned as a baby in Eisen and raised by foster parents, desperate to fit in, unable to get the whole 'Eisen' thing just right, cursed by the Fae and disliked by everyone.
(I don't know why everyone hates her! But every single 'enemy', 'rival' and 'vendetta' flaw came up during that destiny spread)
And it's a glorious and shiny new concept. Just not one I would have thought of for myself.

5 of clubs: 2 pt rivalry - there was a girl from my village that I never got along with. No matter what I did, she did it better. Damn her!
3 of spades: 2 raises on any given intimidation role. I seem to creep people out slightly after being bitten by a mysterious shadowy snake in the forest. I don't know what further side effects may develop from the snake's venom.
6 of clubs: 2 pt nemesis. Someone else really doesn't like me. I am not entirely sure why.
1 of spades: Legendary trait - brawn. On a trip to Avalon I found a small man trapped underneath a rock. I lifted it up for him to escape and he blessed me with strength. It was based on this that Jeremiah made me do an Avalonian destiny spread as well, as I'd clearly spent time there. I may possibly fiddle with the back story of this, by the way...

3 of hearts: 2 pt sidhe blood background. With a curse attached. Of course it had to be a curse!
1 of hearts: 2 pt sidhe blood background. With a blessing this time! Jeremiah told me around then that whatever my character might believe herself to be, she wasn't Eisen!
7 of clubs: 3 pt vendetta. Ummmm...someone else doesn't like me. I am beginning to wonder if my character just smells really bad or something. Either that, or this is the hand of my nemesis at work.
6 of clubs: 1 pt nemesis + defeated. Yes. Yes. Yes. I get the message. No one likes me. They beat me up regularly. I'm just trying to work out if this is the same nemesis as the one from Eisen?
As a note, jez has cheerfully been doing three destiny spreads for everyone, with one from where you're from, one where you've spent some time, and one randomly thrown in. The three destiny spreads started with one player being Complicated, and has just spread, so he randomly told me to draw from the Ussura deck too. Because he always thinks of me as being a bit Russian.

2 of hearts: 1 pt lost love. I cannot remember if my Lost Love likes me or not. I think my odds are not good!
5 of clubs: 3 pts hunted. Apparently I broke a few laws. Allegedly. And now I'm being hunted by the law. I think the Judge just didn't like me!
8 of hearts: 2 pts hidden true identity. This got turned into the whole 'not really Eisen' thing.
10 of hearts: Reduced price Pyrem. This became the 'half Avalonian, half Ussuran' background. Left abandoned on a doorstep in Eisen by a worried parent.
To tidy up the huge pile of complicated blessings and cursings I had from the Fae, Jeremiah found me a background which means I'm a member of the MacCodrum family, who are descended from Selkies. I get a bundle of bits from that - the 'stunning appearance' trait, the 'child of the sea' merit, I'm immune to disease and slow to age. But I'm also vulnerable to iron and take minuses whilst away from the sea. As I was raised in Eisen, this explains why I've never been apparently very good at anything. I've been on penalities all over the place for my entire life!
Maybe now I've run away to join the Explorers Guild I might have a hope in hell of surviving...

ksirafai's background may have changed a teensy bit too. She's less 'aristocratic Castillian' and more 'crazed kleptomaniac wanted across half of Theah' as a result of her destiny spread. She was last heard of in the Pirate Nations because no one else would take her.
