A review and a ponder...
Oct. 13th, 2008 09:42 pmFirst of all, a somewhat belated review of Hellhound on my Trail.
The site says: Bay rum, bourbon vanilla, galangal, hyssop, High John the Conqueror root, tobacco, life everlasting, and brimstone.
In the bottle: Mmm...yes. I can smell the rum and vanilla, definitely. It smells exceedingly edible. It reminds me slightly of Shub Niggurath, which was also very edible.
On the wrist: Yup - this definitely reminds me of shub niggurath. Turns out 'hellhound on my trail' has followed me into the kitchen. Probably because he hopes I'm going to feed him. It's a nice warm scent, however. Very good for autumn.
One hour later: Mmmmmmm...yes...a nice warm scent, with the rum and vanilla having held firm and constant. I've never really got the brimstone, or tobacco, but it's a very lovely autumn smell nonetheless - warm and spicy and somewhere between edible and alcoholic. I've now worn it for three days running and I can't stop sniffing at my wrists contentedly.
Overall: 9/10. I have decided that generally the proof of the perfume is in the wearing. Or, in other words, if I wear it regularly, and find Jeremiah making nice and happy noises about the scent, then it counts as a good buy.
In other news, is anyone thinking about doing a group order on the Halloween/autumn/yule scents? They are up on the site, and quite a few look really nice. I could probably do an order by myself if needs be, but I would obviously prefer to not do this alone. I'm not sure I can afford more than one, but there are many many gorgeous perfumes.
Anyone?
THE SEA RAT
Seaweed, ambergris, and sea buckthorn berry with exotic herbs, incense smoke, ship wood, and Burmese musk.
MOLE
Antiqued sandalwood, patchouli, and soft mosses.
WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT 2008
Embrace your villainy: balsam, myrrh, mandarin orange, bitter clove, artemesia, rosewood, nutmeg, dark musk, smoke and cypress.
MIDNIGHT MASS 2008
This perfume is a traditional Roman Catholic sacramental incense, most often used during a Solemn Mass. Traditionally, five tears of this incense, each encased individually in wax that has been fashioned into the shape of a nail, are inserted into the paschal candle. This is, of course, represents the Five Wounds of Our Risen Savior. Symbolically, the burning of the incense signifies spiritual fervor, the fragrance itself inspires virtue, and the rising smoke carries our prayers to God.
JOHN BARLEYCORN
Barley, beer, blood, and whiskey.
I think I can only afford a maximum of 2, which right now are looking like Midnight Mass 2008 and maybe John Barleycorn, although the Sea Rat is also looking very tempting.
