So, other people are writing about where they would like to be in 10 years time. And whilst I am not following the meme I totally wanted to do this one.

It's called Kaya Mawa lodge, it's in Malawi and it's amazing. An island with little chalets by the water. I would like to be waking up, and thinking happy thoughts about breakfast in bed, followed with happy thoughts about a morning swim, and maybe then a light lunch, and perhaps an afternoon of lounging.

As for the rest of it, who knows? Life hasn't worked out as I planned so far, and that seems to have been the coolest thing about it.

Oh, dear, you talked about impossible dreams around me...

So - what's stopping you moving there? Or somewhere real similar?

*Does some reading* From about £200 per night - that's moderately expensive, but not too bad.

Does it have to be this place, or just somewhere nice and tropical?

I do sometimes consider VSO. It's one of the many things I'm thinking about. In the short term tho, I know I want to spend the next year sorting out my finances and taking a year off from stress and career, whilst building up some useful management and corporate skills which will mean it'll be easier for me to pick up work quickly when needed.

Plus, it's really really liberating to walk out of the office at 5 pm every day and to not worry. Right now, I am definitely where I want to be. In 12 months time, however, all bets are off!

I would be happy to be flexible with where it was.

I do want to get the money together to take off again. In more serious terms, I want to get about £5k together over the next couple of years which would cover a decent trip to somewhere far far from here for a decent period of time. One of the things I like about current job is that it has a bonus scheme which would mean a nice lump sum of between £1k - £3k once per year. And that's a good way of getting travelling money.

VSo ain't the only way. It occurs to me that in this post-Internet age, and given the living costs in a lot of places, you could cheerfully up sticks, fly to Indonesia, for example, and subsist on doing writing gigs online through places like Elance.com for as long as you wanted...

I've ranted about "Four Hour Work Week" to you, right? If not, I should have done.

I'll dig out some of Tim Ferriss' articles and point you at them. Short version: he's a guy who wanders around the world doing interesting stuff, supported by a) the fact that it's cheaper to live almost anywhere other than Europe and the US and b) a business he can run on minimal hours from anywhere, although the latter can be substituted by freelance work or similar.

Now I think about it, you're one of the people I could most see doing something similar.
