So, I've now seen the Expandables.

After some consideration and conversation with [profile] ksirafai, we (the team who defended the A Team on feminist grounds and fought off accusations of sexism in it) would like to say that the Expendables is definitely a sexist movie.

Well, that or a touching 'Brokeback Mountain' style love story between Sylvester Stallone and Jason Stratham, with a couple of women who insisted on trying to get between them. That also works.

We were also speculating as to whether their special magic attack plane sprayed forth petrol (which they could then set on fire to blow up bad guys with) or sheer testosterone.

We think the latter. It came from their sweat. And the testosterone they didn't use as a weapon, they drank!

Next up, the Sorceror's Apprentice next week!

So is switching from the A-Team to the Expendables going from the sublime to the ridiculous, the ridiculous to the sumblime or just from one level of sublime ridiculousness to another?

Bah. I thought it was out next week, and was going to try to organise people to go see it.

It was a last minute thing. We didn't plan it. Ginnie and Matt went on a date. Jez and I decided at half part eight to get out of the house.

I was going to ask you about cinema next week!

I liked the Sorceror's Apprentice. Enjoyable film.

Do not expect to do all of that film in Awakening. But you may hope to do 3/4 of it.

I find the Bechel Rule (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheBechdelTest?from=Main.BechdelsRule) quite interesting to think about whilst watching a movie.

1)Does the movie have two female characters (with names)
2)Do they talk to each other
3)About something other than a man

You would be amazed how many movies fail at this! Alien passes, as do a few others. Its certainly an interesting thing to look out for.

So what's the feminist defence of the A-Team?

(I take it you liked it?)

I think it basically goes;
"There are *way worse* films as sexism goes, it was kinda limited in what they could and couldn't include because it's based on a series, and at least they put one part way competent girl in it and she *kept her top on!*"

Oh dear! It seems I may have made a bad choice for birthday viewing tomorrow then!

On the up side, I get to have a birthday *rant* which I'm sure will be cathartic.

Maybe I'll write some more character fic to get my adjectives warmed up in preperation. ;)

I'm still interested in seeing it if the plan involves somewhere in London.

Well, in its defense, it doesn't _pretend_ to be a feminist film. And the explosions are very enthusiastic!

Sounds like the explosions might do more acting than the rest of the cast if they manage to adequately convey enthusiasm.

Micky Rourke acts! He has a monologue at one point that he puts his little heart and soul into. We were very touched.

Bruce Willis may do a bit of sneaky acting as well, on the side.

Arnie doesn't even bother trying. The only thing he didn't do was wink at the camera and say 'I'll be back'.
