I think my laptop is dying.

Allegedly it has a battery life of 7 hours. It can actually last about 15 minutes away from a power cable when fully charged. Anything more challenging than firefox means it overheats and shuts down within about 10 minutes. It can't run photoshop, WoW, or Dragon Age. I've done a complete reinstall once. That basically meant it could cope with firefox and that doesn't kill it. Anything more still messes it up.

It might need a new battery. I don't know. I hope that will at least drag out its life expectancy as I can't afford a new laptop right now. I just have this bad feeling that it's going down and there's not a lot I can do about it.

Sounds more like the battery is dying. Take it in to one of to mender in case thats all it needs.

Open it (carefully) and see if there is a huge mass of dust and cat hair blocking up the fans etc. Clean. Use.

Though it sounds like battery death is also occurring!

I have a can of compressed air that's good for cleaning stuff like that out.

If it's just the battery, that's at least a fairly cheap easy to replace component. I'd also agree with the suggestions to cleaning out the air vents in case it's overheating due to a blocked/failed fan.

Overheating means dust. Clean and see if it improves. Use compressed air.
