The first thing that I realised is that all these psychological tests based on what mental images float through your brain seem to break on my brain, which seems to be a big storehouse of mental images from memory, from films, from pictures, from stories, and I think they are somewhat stronger than my subconscious desire to tell me what I'm secretly thinking.

I mean, my mental story started with myself and [profile] pierot walking through a wood. This is reasonable - he is quite an important person to me. The odd thing was that the image of us was much more loosely defined than the image of the wood we were walking in. The wood we were walking is in a wood near my father's house in Lambourn. I went for a walk round it with [profile] melsner when he was visiting. I used to go riding there a lot. I've spent hours pottering around that forest, especially in spring, like it is now, when the bluebells are out and grow to knee height.

So, all my answers from then on in were limited by what I thought might feasibly be in that wood. My dream house right now is probably in London. But that wouldn't fit in the wood, and so I described a big red brick house, with crooked staircases and little windows, because there is a really nice house like that near the wood I was thinking of. The body of water was simply the pool that I used to go swimming in as a kid. I like the pool (although it always scared me from when I was about eight, when my mother decided to ban swimming there after a kid drowned there due to cramp - it was a chalk spring, and the water was always very cold compared to the ambient temperature around it.

And my animal? A squirrel that I cooed over. That's not how I deal with my problems, but it is the animal most likely to be in those woods.

I've had this issue before with a couple of these psychological tests. I think my English Lit teacher at school thought I was crazy - we were meant to write a story which started with us walking along a road, and describing it. I had Mont St Michel on the brain, due to a visit there the week previously, and Hamlet floating around in my head as well. The mental imagery came from there. I'm sure we can all predict where it progressed to...

Do these tests work for any of you?
