An odd experience...

It is 10 am.

I am sitting at my computer, typing away as I slowly stir from a sluggish slumber.

(In good news, my ear ache has subsided a fair bit. I started being able to sleep properly around 4 am, and I actually was able to lie down and sleep from around 8 am. Go me!)

As I sit there, I get a really strong whiff of cigarette smoke. No, not even cigarette smoke. Ashtray. I can smell a full ashtray, as strongly as if it were sat on the table next to me. I inhaled deeply, and the smell was definitely there.

The odd thing is that no one in my house smokes, and we don't let smokers smoke indoors. We've never had an ashtray.

It's very odd.

Do I have a heavy smoking ghost? If not, where on earth is the odour coming from?

I wouldn't have thought the chair would retain the smell that long, but it's the most plausible suggestion anyone has come up with so far!

You'll have to put me outside next time, or throw soapy water on me as soon as I walk in.

But yeah... it would be a very long time to retain a smell that strong.

It is probably the after effect of your ear problem. I know that a lot of nose problems can lead to ear ache - perhaps this is just something odd in the other direction?

it's probably on some clothes. i am a non-smoker and get absolutely cranky when i go out, because when i come back home my jacket, hair, jeans, entire body STINK of cigarettes

I sometimes get the smell in my living room from people who take cigarette breaks in the yard behind my flat. Happens even when the window's shut, if the wind is blowing in the right direction. Could it have been someone outside your house?

Try putting a hot water bottle on your ear. My brother used to suffer from ear ache as a child and it really used to help. - R
