[profile] pierot and I just got back from Apocalypto.

Mel Gibson is insane, but possibly a genius. The film is bloody, messy, demented, has some very very peculiar outlooks on the world at times, and is absolutely entrancing.

I don't quite know how to describe it. How can one describe an epic action movie entirely performed in ancient Mayan? I do know that I'm glad I went to see it, and would recommend it, for the experience if nothing else.

But dear god, the blood! I may well have peculiar dreams tonight...

Did you get irritated by the dodgy hand-held camera work that looked like they'd cut in camcorder shots from someone's back garden?
or is that just me?

See, I'm just not sure how the Jews were responsible for that particular war...

You see, I read the moral of the story as 'colonialism only happened to those countries who deserved it', possibly followed by 'the spanish inquisition were right to execute all the evil human sacrificing mayans - thank god the conquistadors arrived!'

Which I think should make you as an American (and I bet the Native Americans were evil too) and me as an English person (Indians, Africans, Americans, Australian, Aborigines - all deserved it) a lot better.

I quite liked it. I thought it was quite nice the way the early scenes were shot in almost documentary style, and you never quite got away from the very immediate, almost eye witness feel to events. It kinda hyped up the emotional intimacy which I don't think you'd have got otherwise in such an alien world.

It sounds like mel has made another intresting and moralistic movie with an odd point of view. I may have to go see it and develop the essay in my head that is already there.
Had to write an essay when I was doing 'Cinema and Religion' on an actor/director so I picked mel.

Any particular reason
