I'm spending my evening watching a nice catholic boy set gunpowder in the centre of London.

Do you think the authorities will be here soon to take him away to the Tower of London? Admittedly, so far he's been no real threat to parliament, but he has made a fairly good stab at blowing up the neighbour's shed.

Note for Americans and other aliens: British people spend November 5th celebrating a failed catholic plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament by lighting a lot of fireworks, and having bonfires. The fact that we're kinda celebrating hundreds of years of the persecution of a religious minority doesn't seem to bother us. It's probably another sign that the English are mostly naturally evil.

Remind me to tell you about our old firework parties at some point...

Hmm. Wonder if there's a decent display on anywhere round here?

Well, that all depends on whether you celebrate the attempt or the failure, doesn't it?

And the Sun never set on the British Empire, because God didn't trust the bastards in the dark.

It was a plot to overthrow the government, bring down arguably the best version of democracy then extant, and subjugate the country to foreign powers.

Sounds at least as much worth celebrating as most other national holidays.

As far as persecution of the Roman Catholics goes - British persecution of religious minorities was stereotypically polite and restrained in almost all cases. Even the notorious Bloody Mary "only" racked up a few dozen dead "heretics" (in her case, those nasty Protestants) during what was seen as a reign of terror. There are reasons why the most famous consignment of religious non-conformists "fleeing" the horrors of life here in the 17th century could only find enough people to charter one small ship - the Mayflower.

Personally, I'd prefer to see more attention given to the glorious revolution, and the minor things like the Bill of Rights that it brought in, but that's not fashionable these days. Whereas fireworks, being gaudily pretty distractions for the masses, are.
