Since a bunch of you seem to be fundraising at the moment, have this thing I got sent at work. How to make your fundraising page work for you.

1. Fundraising summary
Writing a page summary is linked to a 36% increase in page value.
Keep it short and sweet. This will be what people see when they land on your Fundraising Page, or when you share it on social media. There’s a word count for a reason – get to the heart of what you’re raising money for, and why it matters.

2. Target
Setting a target donation amount can result in a 45% increase in page value.
Setting a target creates momentum and gives you a goal to focus on. Aim for the minimum you need to make your good thing happen.

3. Image
Uploading a profile picture is linked to a 23% increase in page value.
Let your picture do some talking too. Grab your smartphone or digital camera and capture something that helps to tell your story. People like people, so show your supporters the faces of the person or community who’ll benefit from your hard work

4 Tell your story
Explain why you are raising money, how you are doing it, and why the cause means so much to you.

5 Updates
Adding a text update can lead to an 8% increase in page value per update.
They might look small, but they pack a big punch. Updating your supporters on how things are going, how close you are to your target, how your training is working out, or just saying thanks for all their help will keep them engaged with your story and fundraising.

6 Include all your fundraising
Make sure you include the donations you’ve received by cash and cheque so that all of your efforts can be seen.

My lecture

So, today is my lecture on the Witch Hunts of Essex for the University of the Third Age. I'm hoping it goes OK and fearing that it won't, but we shall see.

I've got a head filled with bibble about witches, and witch hunts, and walking, and swimming, and familiars and religion and the English Civil War. I just hope it all stays in place when I'm in front of everyone.

See you all on the flipside.

Ok. That's one set of tests for a temp agency thoroughly screwed up. Also, I just fell off the sofa because it was rocking so badly to my labyrinthitis raddled senses. I do not need this right now.

Oxford

I am reconsidering my 'I don't want to live in Oxford' thoughts.

It turns out that working for Oxford University, with lunches either in the centre of town, or walking through the Parks, working surrounded by clever and interesting people for a really remarkably fuzzy institution is really nice.

(Although I need to keep away from the High Street on Friday "just got paid" lunchtimes for ever. Otherwise I will end up defaulting on every bill I owe and living as a very well dressed tramp)

OK, so today is not my last day in work.

I'm in tomorrow as well.

Oh well. At least it'll be quiet.

That is now two lectures I am booked to do as a totally independent human being and freelance semi-academic in the near future.

This makes me feel a lot more perky. Even if I am just going to be doing generic temp work for a while I will have this too. I still have a bit of a career. Right now, that is enough and maybe it can lead on to something more.

annwfyn: (nonsense - what would galinda do?)
I don't suppose anyone fancies coming to a lecture on Hogarth, Gin and Vice in Georgian London on Tuesday in Braintree do they? I will be talking about lots of dubious stuff, with some barely tasteful woodcut etchings to illustrate some of my points....

Hello! This is some work based research. Currently my place of work (which is a museum) is potentially looking to hugely develop our web presence and what we're doing with our website and I'm looking for companies who might want to partner with us.

Does anyone here either know or, has worked for, or has worked with a really good web design company who like experimenting, innovating, and do interesting things with interactive websites and web design? All recommendations welcome. Feel free to either comment here or mail me at sally.brewer@braintree.gov.uk.

annwfyn: (seasonal - November)
I just got a call from my temp agency today.

One of the guys I was working with at Babcock wants to send me some chocolates to say 'thank you' for sorting out a load of data entry stuff for him whilst I was working there.

This is remarkably good for three reasons.

1) The temp agency now think I'm fab and thanked me for doing such a good job because 'it reflects really well on us as an agency'.

2) It's really nice for me to feel like I did a good job. I feel all glowy and positive now. I haven't felt really positive about a job for such a long time and it's just been so psychologically healthy to realize that there are good working environments out there, and I can do well in them.

3) I get chocolate! Yay!

This has really made my morning so far.

Stuff

So.

I now have a job until the end of November. It involves being a receptionist. Sadly, they are not just going to pay me to read books for all that time. If I'm staying longer, my boss wants to train me up and give me more responsibility. I am going to miss the quiet reading time. But I do like the money.

I also have a car back. I have £250 less money. This is better than I was expecting, although it is not good.

I have 8 hours per day of access to the BBC world service and news channels. I now know more about the British economy than I ever needed to know. I am also learning a lot about short wave radio and about the strange secret power of the people who actually broadcast a lot of the BBC.

I am also pondering Elizabethan and Jacobean poetry. I'm not quite sure why.

I think that is all.
