annwfyn: (Misc - journey)
I was told ages ago that by thinking positive thoughts you can retrain your brain. It's like a reset. I'm often not good at this, and today the world feels particularly grim. But I think it's good to focus.

So, I'm listing three things I like about me (because I'm feeling particularly useless), three things I like about my life (because it feels very out of control and overwhelming), three things I like about today (which will get me off the sofa), and three things that make me feel optimistic about the world in general (because god knows, there's enough to feel bad about).

You should all do that too.

Goodness. One obnoxiously smug article refuted by another. Actually, I think the second article annoys me more. Mostly because people being happy is generally less irritating than being bitter. But both seem pretty certain that everyone wants the same things.

How about we take away from this the following life lessons.

Please let interest rates stay low. Please let the economy not improve too much.

I need the market to stay as it is until the summer when I re-mortgage. Right now, I could get a fixed rate mortgage at nearly 2% less than I'm paying at the moment. I wantssss that. I wants it so bad.

First of all, before I begin this entry, I feel the need to gloat.

I AM BECOME SALZOR: DESTROYER OF NETTLES

Yes, that feels much better. I've just got in from an hour or so attacking my garden with a strimmer. Currently the garden is looking ragged, but there are no more nettles, no more knee high grass and I'm quite impressed with how solid my roses are looking. I'm considering getting some more rose bushes, actually, as they seem to be the only thing that flourish in my garden. I'm just not sure what will go with my current rose bush, which is a silver ghost shrub rose. I'm considering getting a rose named 'Cardinal Richelieu', just because I love the name, but will purple flowers go with white?

Oh! The decisions!

Anyway, away from that. How has my bank holiday weekend been?

Absolutely lovely.

First there was my Saturday, when I met up with Matt Hope and was generally social )

Sunday was a day of gaming )

There is some rambling about the dungeon bashes I have run in here too )

I've also been having other random gaming ideas )

And today I've been gardening and soon will be social )

I hope everyone else has had a lovely weekend. Feel free to tell me about it. I always like to know...

*I had watched Resident Evil shortly before statting that base. The more time PCs spend there, the more apparent this becomes. It may be just as well that the game is ending soon, as I think I'll get throttled if anyone ever makes it down to the subterranean levels.

My new bathroom is nearly finished!

It's lovely and blue and shiny. I'm ridiculously excited about this, even if it is just a bathroom.

There will be pictures soon. The builders say they should be done around 5 ish.

I've just taken a new fixed rate mortgage with Abbey.

I had to hand over a cheque for £924. I am staring in blank horror at my bank balance. And on top of that, my mortgage will still be going up by £90 come August.

However, I am informed that in the time it has taken me to decide whether to accept Abbey's offer on a new fixed rate, the rates on offer have got worse and my 5.8% interest rate is half a point lower than the next best offer available via Abbey right now. It's also fully portable so if I move house I can take the mortgage with me, and I can overpay by up to 10% every year.

*sighs*

At least this is one less thing to worry about. My mortgage is now fixed for another two years. I know how much I need to pay, I know that my house won't get taken away from me. And that makes me feel a bit better.

There's a next step to come somewhere. I just need to work out what that is.

...I've just spent the afternoon in the garden - the plants you sent me are now in the earth, next to my strawberry plant.

I also seem to have tiny little seedlings coming through the earth where I planted the wildflower seeds. I was very happy when I went to water them today.

My garden is growing!

I was woken this morning by the slightly alarmingly gung ho shouts of the megaphone wielding individuals in trucks who drive at the front of the London marathon runners this morning, as they jogged past my house.

This was an alarming way for Sunday morning to begin. I have, however, soothed the stress of being that close to so much physical fitness by pottering in the garden. I have now sown pansy seeds, and planted the strawberry plants that [profile] lanfykins brought me yesterday - which are very very appreciated.

For those who are interested - here are some photographs of my very scruffy beginners gardening efforts )

It's been a very quiet weekend - [profile] pierot came down with a vile migraine yesterday, so that rather nuked our capacity to do anything - but a very nice one for all that. I've had my gardening time, my reading books time, and my watching trashy TV time. I also seem to have finished my chemistry essay with one day to tidy it up, which makes me happy.

Today I am heading over to Lewisham to see [profile] kittyboo_tastic, and then coming back to go swimming with [profile] pierot and [profile] ksirafai and tidy up my essay for handing in tomorrow. For tomorrow, term begins again...

  • I need to drink more. I got slightly tipsy on both Friday night, when we had a bit of a BBQ after the ST meeting, and then again yesterday when [profile] pierot and I went into London to meet up with Nick and Mandy. On both Saturday and today I had a lousy headache. I suspect it comes from a lack of familiarity with alchohol. My body really doesn't like it any more.

  • I want my bpal packages to arrive! I've now bought four imps on ebay, and have am waiting for them to come through the post. I've had to wait for the whole bank holiday weekend so far, and am lacking interesting new smells.

I also have a magical and lovely package coming from [personal profile] obake in the US as well which I'm getting all impatient waiting for.

  • It's odd - the first week of my easter holiday has gone already, and suddenly I'm aware that I may be working next week, and I've got another two weeks to write up a 3000 word essay on DNA testing. Time passes so very quickly.

  • I love having a garden. I don't think I've really made the most of my garden before now - it's been cold and rainy, and so it has just rather stayed there - this tangle of weeds and grass. Last week I hacked the greenery back into a passable, if slightly wild lawn. Now it's flat and smooth enough to lay a blanket out on, and with the weather as nice as it has been, it's wonderful to be able to sprawl in the sun. I'm currently trying to work out what to do next, and am looking thoughtfully at getting some wild flower seeds and seeing if I can just sprinkle them about my garden, although I'm tempted to pick up something to plant for this summer.

  • [profile] astro_dust said recently that he was beginning to feel as if bpal was some kind of cult which was sucking in every single female role player he knew.

It's true! Since I starting expressing an interest in the stuff I have discovered that everyone I know is also collecting, swapping and chatting about Black Phoenix Alchemy Laboratories. I don't know if it's a bad thing, and I think it might be part of the fun, but it's very strange to realise that Polly was right.

Well, almost right. I believe [profile] wraithwitch and [profile] ksirafai are remaining stalwart and resisting. For the moment, at any rate...

  • I am in a writing mood today and am trying to scribble nonsense. Has anyone got any ideas?
