annwfyn: (cats - ying/yang)
This came up last night while randomly chatting to a couple of folk about kittens (which are the cutest thing in the world - trufax) and I was encouraged to post here. For I have now had cats in some form for most of my life, with my current precious precious goblin cats having been with me for (I think) twelve years.
Five things I wish everyone knew and accepted before acquiring a feline overlord to rule your every move.

I'm not going to pretend I'm the perfect cat owner. I've made mistakes and compromises like anyone. There are also big issues I'm not getting into, like whether you can keep a vegetarian cat (I know folk who do, I know folk who say it's cruel, I don't, so have no comment to make) or the whole 'adopt, don't shop' movement (we got our cats as kittens as Jez's asthma means that Cornish Rex are the best breed for us - they don't seem to set off an allergic reaction in anything like the same way as most other cats. And I regret nothing). I also am not going to discourage anyone from getting a cat, because I think my cats are gorgeous and lovely and I feel constantly grateful that I've had the massive privilege of their company for the last 12 years. I just am aware, more than ever, that they are a big commitment. I've been super lucky with mine - they have largely been healthy chilled out little beasts who have never destroyed a sofa or carpet and love human beings with all the beneficence that cats can manage. But they have changed my life and they will change yours, if you get a feline.

Good luck.

Myrddin just came and propped his chin up on my arm and just sat there, waiting.

Bless his little feline heart.

He is adorable.

Madoc has managed to dye his fur.

I don't know how, but he has two blue stripes down his side, the exact shade of Jeremiah's normal blue-black hair dye.

I shall now find out what happens. Does cat fur grow out? Does permanent hair dye eventually fade away? Do I have a ginger and blue cat for life?

Enquiring minds do want to know...

My little white cat is not well. Myrddin seems to have a wound in his chest which isn't healing. He seems fine - he's bouncing around, and eating, and trying to kill me if I pick him up - but there is this nasty hole in his fur. [profile] ksirafai is taking him to the vets tomorrow as I can't get out of work to do it myself. This makes me sad, ad I'm also beginning to fret about my kitten.

I am hoping he'll be fine - he's not seeming ill or broken - but I'm definitely fretting.

I went to see Avatar tonight. I did like it, but I came out of it rather feeling like Nancy in Enchanted, upon meeting Prince Edward.

"Wow. You way you said that, without a hint of irony. It's very..."

James Cameron does have the most amazing ability to entirely ignore any little internal voices he might have which tell him he needs irony, or pop culture references, or knowing winks to the audience. He turns his back to the fourth wall with a great deal of determination, and embraces the world he makes utterly.

And the weird thing is that it works. Mild spoilers lurk beneath )

Apparently there are another two films coming. I'm looking forward to them.

I know the snow is a pain, but I must admit that I've rather liked it. I got out of work at 6 pm, and walked across Waterloo Bridge, very slowly, to avoid slipping in the snow. On the South Bank, the Cologne Christmas Market was in full swing. The carousel was spinning, with 'Walking in the Air' playing.

I know snow is a pain, I really do. But I'm glad I saw the painted horses dancing in the snow.

One small white cat just ran in to the living room.

He is filthy dirty, has wolfed his food as if he was starving, has run about the house checking it's still there, and has loudly demanded attention from everyone he can get hold of.

No obvious signs of being hurt, but he does not look like a cat who has had the best of times. [profile] pierot thinks he looks like he had to dig his way out of somewhere. He is, however, now home, fed and isn't going anywhere.

Thank you for everyone I've stressed at over the last few days. God! I just feel so much better.

Still no Myrddin.

He's not been taken to any of the nearby cat rescue places, or the local vets.

I've tried knocking on doors, but not a lot of my neighbours were in.

I'm really beginning to fret. I want my cat back.

So, Myrddin still isn't back yet. I'm getting twitchy, mostly because he's not done this before. He does go off adventuring, but always comes home. As far as I'm aware, he sticks to the back gardens, which means he hopefully hasn't been hit by a car, but that doesn't stop me worrying.

I'm going to give it a few hours and then I'm going to start calling the vets and wandering around the neighbours to see if one of them has him.

So, Myrddin wasn't about this morning. He was about last night, but when I got up this morning he had vanished.

He hasn't come back yet.

I am beginning to get mildly worried. I know that Myrddin is the more adventurous of my cats, and this isn't totally unheard of for him. I just dislike it when either of them are gone for more than a couple of hours or so.

Madoc and Myrddin totally do this.

Look! Look! Cat architecture! A house designed for cats!

Isn't it strangely cool? Although I think whoever added the roof beams did not properly think through the likelihood of death from above cat attacks.
